課程概述 |
This course introduces the major components of public health research methods, including basics of research, research ethics, selection of research topic, research designs, quantitative and qualitative research approaches, data collection, data analysis, and study findings presentation. The purpose of this course is to improve students’ understanding towards and practical skills of the research methods commonly adopted in the field of public health. Students will be equipped with competencies necessary for developing a research project in public health for their practicum or master thesis research by identifying a research question, choosing appropriate methods and research design that could answer the question, and drafting the full research proposal. |
課程目標 |
By the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Select quantitative and qualitative data collection methods appropriate for a given public health context (MPH-2)
2. Analyze quantitative and qualitative data using biostatistics, informatics, computer-based programming and software, as appropriate (MPH-3)
3. Design a population-based policy, program, project or intervention (MPH-9)
4. Select methods to evaluate public health programs (MPH-11)
5. Design a research project. |
課程要求 |
The students are expected to:
1. Have read assigned articles and book chapters before class and come prepared and participate actively in class discussion.
2. Finish 6 take-home assignments. Assignments are due at 11:59 pm one day before the class.
3. Complete a proposal writing exam that includes literature review, research question, research design, and limitation.
*Students should notify the instructor of their absence in advance. Students will not pass the course with three times of absence without proper justifications. |
